Electrical items — anything with a plug, battery or cable — shouldn't go in your household bin. Here's what to do with them instead.
What the crossed-out bin symbol means
The crossed-out wheeled bin on an electrical product or its packaging means it must not be thrown away with unsorted household waste. It has to be collected separately so it can be treated and recycled.
Why it matters
Electrical and electronic equipment can contain hazardous substances that harm the environment and human health if they end up in landfill or general waste. Recycled properly, the materials inside — metals, plastics and glass — can be recovered and used again. Reusing, repairing or donating items that still work is even better.
Where to recycle for free
You can take old electricals to your local household waste recycling centre, and many shops and community drop-off points accept them too — usually free of charge. Find your nearest point by postcode at Recycle Your Electricals.
